Mary J Blige's debut album What's The 411? (1992) was so succes***ul, fans invented a genre to describe its sound: hip-hop soul. Now known as 'the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul', Blige has sold over 40 million records and inspired countless stars of contemporary R&B.
One of the first records produced by a young man called Sean Combs, What's The 411? went on to sell over two million copies after several singles became R&B hits. My Life (1994) was even more popular, winning critical praise and going triple platinum in the US. Blige also won her first Grammy for a collaboration with Method Man, and saw "Not Gon' Cry" rise to No.2 in the pop charts. Share My World (1997) continued her success, topping the album chart, selling over five million copies worldwide and spawning four hit singles. Mary (1999) marked a movement away from hip-hop and into mature soul, and again was very popular, though the singles weren't as popular as previous ones. No More Drama (2001) brought a revival when "Family Affair" became Blige'***irst Hot 100 chart-topper, staying at the top for six weeks. Love and Life (2003) saw P Diddy return to production duties, but despite selling platinum it was criticised by the press and fans. But they were ready to forgive and forget with The Breakthrough (2005), which proved to be her most succes***ul album yet. "Be Without You" topped the R&B chart for a record 15 weeks, while a duet with U2 earned Blige her most succes***ul UK single yet, with "One" reaching No.2. The combined album and singles sales reached 18 million worldwide, and earned her eight Grammy nominations; she won three of them.
Mary J. Blige's eighth album Growing Pains was released at the end of 2007, climbing to No.1 on the album chart in its second week out.
